Fantabulous First Grade Books:
Using fantabulous literature in learning to read and write is the foundation of our classroom community. Over the course of the year, we will read aloud and share over 40 classroom favorite books, including the ones below. These books will help us problem solve with friends, learn how to say what we mean, find our voice to gain confidence as the person we are becoming, as well as help us dig in and find the main character or problem of a story. Our 'favorites' basket grows each year, and is a great springboard for every lesson you can think of in life. It is always a favorite part of first grade.
Mem Fox has always been many teacher's go to author; she is one of the
most acclaimed children's authors from Australia, and a huge
proponent of using authentic stories to teach children to love reading!
I have included a link to her website, where you will find great ideas to
inspire you and your child to dig into books--and maybe even devour them,
as we like to say in our classroom community.
Other titles by Mem Fox:
Possum Magic
Koala Lou
Hattie and the Fox

Jan Brett's books, such as The Mitten, Hedgie's Surprise, and tons more, might be the most recognizable books to your child. Many use the same sweet Hedgie character, as well as countless other animals that Brett 'gets to know' in their natural habitat before she includes them in her books. She also illustrates her own stories, a task your own student will be doing in Writer's Workshop all year long. Jan Brett will certainly become our exemplar author as we strive to author our own stories this year. She, like Mem Fox, has an interactive website as well that I have included a link button to.
